What is Windshield Chip Repair?

Windshield chip repair is the process of filling in the chip and minor cracks in your windshield. This restores the strength and integrity to the windshield. Your windshield is made up of two planes of harden glass and a clear laminate layer between them. The laminate keeps the second layer of glass from breaking on an impact. Most chipped windshields are only chipped on the outside layer of glass. To fix the chip the technician forces resin into the damaged area and after a few seconds uses suction to pull out the trapped air in-between the glass planes. After a few cycles of pushing the resin in and suction the chip is completely full. Once the chip is full of the resin, the technician then uses UV light to cause a chemical change to the resin. The change causes the resin to harden which holds the glass together restoring the integrity of the windshield. Once the resin has harden the last step is to add a pit sealer to keep unwanted dirt out of the impact site. Once that is done a quick clean up is performed. After the technician leaves you may still see the initial impact site. This is normal, but be rest assured that the repair is done and the chip will not spread.

Why Windshield Chip Repair?

When a rock chips your windshield it can be very frustrating, especially if you have to look at it everyday. Most people try to ignore the issue, and go about as if it not there, but they don't realize that over time that chip can spread into a crack that can compromise the whole windshield. No one wants to have to replace a windshield, its very expensive and takes a lot of time.

Insurance companies are no different, they know it's only a matter of time before the chipped windshield gives up and breaks. This is why under comprehensive coverage nearly every insurance company is willing to pay for chip repairs. They don't want to have to pay for a complete windshield replacement, and worry about the hassle that causes. Therefore they normally waive the deductible and you don't pay a dime. Which means after scheduling your appointment and a short repair, your windshield will be as strong as ever. No need to worry about having your windshield cracking anymore.
